Crypto Users Alarmed by Phishing Emails Impersonating Patreon

Crypto users have raised concerns about a wave of phishing emails with crypto themes that appear to be sent from content creator platform Patreon. Scammers are signing up email addresses for Patreon and then using them to send malicious emails from fake crypto projects on the platform.

Phishing Attack Details

Reports of these phishing attacks emerged on January 23, with users sharing experiences of receiving fake airdrop offers impersonating well-known crypto projects like Chainlink (LINK), Solana (SOL), Manta Network (MANTA), and Sui (SUI) on Patreon.

Patreon's Response

Patreon Support responded to the crypto community's concerns, stating that they had identified and resolved the issue, which stemmed from an "email verification and a follow-up from a crypto account falsely claiming to be a Patreon creator." They assured users that affected accounts were being addressed.

Continued Reports

Despite Patreon's response, some users have reported receiving scam emails for several days after the initial reports, suggesting that the problem may not be fully resolved.

Phishing Scams in Crypto

Phishing scams have been a persistent issue in the crypto space. In 2023, more than 324,000 cryptocurrency users fell victim to such scams, resulting in a total loss of $295 million, according to the blockchain security platform Scam Sniffer.
